English Heritage has launched campaign to save at risk conservation areas – including Holmfirth.
Places causing concern to English Heritage are deemed to be at risk of neglect or damage to their unique character, after having deteriorated over the past three years.
An article in the Huddersfield Examiner stated:
Holmfirth town centre has been classed as one of the worst-affected conservation areas in West Yorkshire because of vacant and derelict properties, such as the former premises of postcard and cinema producers Bamforth and Co.
English Heritage states on its site:
is it at risk?
Yes. Holmfirth has some listed buildings at risk, some vacant and derelict properties and overall signs of lack of investment. The town centre has deteriorated significantly and the public areas are of a poor standard. There is perhaps a loss of business confidence which has been further threatened by a recent Tesco development proposal one mile out of the town centre.
What, if anything, is being done to save it? By the council? By the residents?
There have been shop front improvement grants from the council and there are active business/residents groups fighting the Tesco proposal.
