Shop keepers and residents in the Yorkshire town made famous by TV’s Last of the Summer Wine are concerned a new superstore could spoil the charm of the Holme Valley.
Tesco wants to build a new store near Holmfirth, which it says will create around 360 jobs and give shoppers more choice but residents and shop keepers are concerned it will take business from the town centre.
Local people are also concerned about an English Heritage report published earlier this month, which reported that locations in the town were on its at-risk register, and have now formed the group Keep Holmfirth Special.
The group has already received over 1,000 messages of support and a meeting is being held tonight in the parish church, in Towngate, at 7.30pm.
