KHS has not rested on its laurels since Tesco withdrew its application. We have been busy talking to people and listening to what they have to say about the strengths and problems facing Holmfirth and the Holme Valley.
We canvased opinion at the Art Market and Craft Fair just before Christmas and circulated copies of a questionnaire. We are very grateful for all of you who completed the form. The results are being analysed and will be used as the basis for an action plan. More on this shortly.
We have also been talking to the local Ward and Parish Councillors. We all want to build on our town’s strengths so it is vital that we all work together and look to the future.
Many people have said that they think the Basics shop in the middle of Holmfirth is becoming an eyesore. We have been in contact with Wilbys and have urged them to encourage the owner to take action. We wait to see what will happen next.
Several other groups in towns under threat from superstores have been in touch to learn from our experience and share their learning. This sort of networking is tremendously helpful and gives us a collective strength. We can not be certain the Tesco will not return with amended plans for the Midlothian site and remain watchful. If plans are submitted we will let as many people know as quickly as possible.
We are also supporting the Fair Traders Co-operative and encourage everyone who cares about the town to do the same. They are proposing to give customers a developing range of affordable ethical products which will have a positive impact on people and planet by trading from the old Toll House bookshop in Holmfirth. Further details of this venture are on their web site – www.fairtraderscooperative.co.uk. We wish them every success.
The Holmfirth Community Breakfast Forum held a conference on “Supporting Families” and has set up three development groups to look at three major issues – Access to services, Alcohol and Supporting parents. Further details can be obtained from the Head Master of Holmfirth High School, Dr Andy Williams.
You may have noticed that the centre of Holmfirth is being cleaned up. Kirklees Council has started a programme of work to remove graffiti and broken signs and generally tidy up the streets. We are very grateful that these small but very important actions are being taken.
