Fair Progress
Issue 8, July 2010
Thank you for your support on the Members evenings, we have had really good feedback and some very encouraging comments in the book. Special thanks to our speakers – Bruce Crowther from The Fairtrade Foundation, Chas Ball, and Directors Elisabeth Bounds and Stephen Sheard on Thursday. For Friday we thank our MP, Jason Mc Cartney and Directors Gerard Hetherington, Peter Beetlestone and Stephen Sheard.
We have received some good publicity including a feature in “About my area” website – HD7 guide!
Also Look North on June 10th – a two minute piece in the 12.30 edition and a four minute piece in the 6.30 edition
In The Examiner on June 15th, “Fair play for fair trade”
In The Yorkshire Post on June 17th, main article on the features page “Co-operative spirit pays dividends for the movement that’s back in business.”
We have appointed some excellent hard working staff, Helen and Anna who are permanent and part time; Claire, Amelia, Leah and Adam are all students appointed on a temporary basis. Their contribution has helped us get off to an excellent start.
We are looking to expand our team of paid staff as the Fair Traders Co-operative develops. We currently have vacancies for someone to work on Web Development to take forward the internet side of the business, and also a Store Supervisor to work on Sundays. Both are part time positions.
We will also need to recruit staff to work in the store from mid-September when our current shop assistants will be returning to university. Again these will be part time roles, working two or three days per week.
If you are interested in any of these roles please contact Gerard Hetherington (gjhetherington@btinternet.com) for a job description.
At a Board Meeting on June 22nd it was agreed that initially “a 1.5% members dividend will be payable in the form of a Gift Voucher once points equivalent to a £10 voucher have been accumulated.” In future, members will vote on a board recommendation regarding the level of dividend, as well as any interest to be paid on member’s investments, at the Annual General Meeting.
A special thanks to all donors and our volunteers especially those who have offered help in the shop – there are gaps on our rotas either for weekly, fortnightly or monthly commitments, particularly on Saturdays and Sundays
If you haven’t had chance to visit the shop yet we encourage you to do so. Judge for yourself; but we think it is really special with a vast range of interesting products, all assessed by our Assessment Team.

We are now working hard to finalise the design and build for our expanded website. We will be spending the coming weeks photographing selected products, arranging text descriptions and populating the website. In addition we are working on the product and supplier assessments to accompany the products.

We would like to thank everyone again for their support and request your continued help and advice as we move ahead. Please feel free to drop us an e mail with any ideas, comments, or criticism, it is your Society.
The Board intends to form a ‘Membership Committee’ tasked with ensuring that the Society’s products , services , activities, and events reflect the wishes of and engage all our membership, wherever they may live. Details of how members can be involved will be given in the next Fair Progress.
We have just welcomed our 436th member and your investments now total £92,440 – fantastic.
We are aware that some members may have not received earlier copies of Fair Progress because their computer will not down load our logos, so we have removed them from this edition again.
