Holmfirth Climate Change Group is inviting residents from the Holme Valley to a presentation from members of Incredible Edible Huddersfield on Thursday 29 July at 7pm at Holmfirth Parish Church Gallery Rooms.
Norah Hamill will give a talk on the activities of the organisation, which builds on the work done by the Permaculture and Transition movements and now has a strong presence in the Holme Valley. Incredible Edible Huddersfield believes that the recipe for a sustainable future lies in our own hands – simply by encouraging the production and buying of food more locally, everyone can help combat the effects of climate change, oil depletion and recession whilst at the same time feeding and nurturing ourselves and the community. The group has already been out planting vegetables in the flower beds in the centre of Holmfirth and is active in a number of projects across the Holme Valley.
Following the presentation there will be a discussion around the issue of more land being made available for public allotments in the Holme Valley and the interest in community supported agriculture.
Holmfirth Climate Change Group, which was established back in April, is also about to set up a website and needs a new and memorable name which will convey its aims and objectives. Options for the choice of name will be put to everyone attending next week’s meeting and a final vote will be taken. If you are unable to attend but would like to express a view please contact Janet Williams by 28th July at janetmikeatpaw@aol.com or ring her number below.
Next Thursday’s event is just the first of a number of regular meetings which Holmfirth Climate Change Group is planning over the coming months. On Sunday 22nd August Kate Hughes will lead a Wild Food Walk with an opportunity to investigate and discover the growth of local and natural plants that can be eaten raw. Details available soon.
